Work Place Success Strategies For Introverts

Introverts are not shy, they are not stuck up, they are not anti-social, they just hate small talk, they are into meaningful conversation, they are great listeners, keen observers, great in recognizing other people’s talent, and nurturing them, they tend to get their energy from within and being around with people drain their energy.

So basically introverts’ characteristics, are different from extroverts. And that’s what makes it difficult for them to survive in this world which is driven by extroverts.

Organisations are also biased when it comes to giving attention to introverts. Instead, of understanding their personalities and utilizing their strength to build up a culture that welcomes everyone, they push introverts to transform themselves and work outside of their temperament, which results in nothing positive but a decline in productivity.

Society and organizations always make introverts feel that their temperament is not going to make them successful. This creates confusion in introverts’ mind and they push harder to act more in an extroverted manner and ignore their own qualities. It all deplete their energy and create a barrier to their success path.

“I worry that there are people who are put in positions of authority because they’re good talkers, but they don’t have good ideas. It’s so easy to confuse schmoozing ability with talent. Someone seems like a good presenter, easy to get along with, and those traits are rewarded. Well, why is that? They’re valuable traits, but we put too much of a premium on presenting and not enough on substance and critical thinking.”― Susan CainQuiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking

So If you are an introvert learn to build your strength and find out ways to outshine yourself in a crowd full of extroverts.

Here are a few tips which can help you in finding your ways –

Networking:

Networking events such as conferences, after work parties are something Introverts hate going to. So try to do it in some other ways such as online networking, many introverts find it helpful to network online as it saves a lot of time and unnecessary communication. Or instead of talking to everyone in the events, try to make at least 2-3 genuine connections with the people by doing one on one interaction.

Speaking influentially:

Introverts hate speaking in public events or speaking in general. But to survive in this corporate world you need to make yourself heard. It’s a well-known fact that introverts are deep thinkers, they always have better thoughts and ideas than others but where they struggle is to put these thoughts into words, and that’s where you need to stretch outside your temperament and practice speaking. You need not speak too much but whatever you speak make sure that it creates such an effect that people hear you and remember you.

Find a job or team which suits your personality:

To save yourself from all the daily struggles find a job profile or company or team, which is in alignment with your personality. Where you can work on your qualities or skills instead of trying hard to position yourself as someone who you are not.

Focus on your own branding:

Extroverts do not leave any chance to get noticed, it’s their basic nature. But you should not get hide behind all this. Yes, you hate spotlight, exaggerating your achievements and talking about yourself but you have to find ways to get noticed. Introverts are generally comfortable in writing, so start writing your work-related updated on LinkedIn and other social media channels. You can float weekly emails at your workplace where you can write about the latest technologies or any other field related updates. And your work-related achievements are there to help you get noticed.

Build genuine relationships:

As mentioned earlier introverts have many qualities which extroverts lack. Such as the ability to listen, high emotional intelligence, attention to details, observation. You just have to make sure that these qualities get noticed. Once your colleagues and manager will start recognizing these qualities, they will trust you like anything and then you can build up genuine relationships with them. And these relationships will last for a long-term.

Extraordinary personality:

Make your personality shine, work on communication skills, presentation skills, body language etc. So that even if you are meeting with few people and not indulging in too much interaction then also people remember you.

So as an introvert, even you are not comfortable being in the center of attention, you can always use these strategies to make your work and yourself noticeable.
